Guide to Packing Books

Those who love to read and pride themselves on an extensive home library have a lot to do when it’s time to move. Books can be a great source of knowledge at your fingertips, but when it comes to moving house, they can be quite the nuisance. So here’s our guide to packing books so that you can move books safely with ease.

Sort books by category

Organize and sort all of your books by category. Doing this may uncover that you have more than one of the same book and it could help you decide whether to keep or trash certain books. Remember the more stuff you have to move, the more money it will take to move it. Sorting your books will help you get organized and make it easier to unpack.

Choose the right box

A good book box is one that is medium in size and has handles on each side. Books can be heavy, even paperbacks. The weight can add up very quickly. It’s important not to fill up a large box with books so that the box will be manageable when you have to carry it around. Also, it’s a good idea to use new boxes for books because they pose less risk of breaking or giving out. Used boxes can be risky. They could be damp, torn, and beat up. A sturdy new box can better protect your books from any damage that might occur during transportation.

How to pack books

There’s no right or wrong way to pack books except for one rule of thumb. Whatever you do, don’t pack books with the spine facing up and paper edges facing down. This will cause books to warp and the pages to bend. For best results, pack books just as you would put them on the shelf. Pack them upright with the spine against the box’s side. For added protection, you can also include a piece of cardboard in between each book. You can also use bubble wrap or padded paper for books that hold extra value such as photo albums, yearbooks, etc.

It’s good practice, to double tape the seams of each box for an extra measure of support. This will help strengthen the box for transport. Boxes should weigh no more than 40 pounds. Check the weight of each box to make sure that it’s not too heavy while packing. If you find a box getting too heavy to carry, but there’s still room in the box, fill the extra space with paper, sheets, pillows, stuffed animals or anything light and fluffy.

As always, common sense is your best defense against mishaps and accidents. Use these tips and your best judgement for safety and a smooth move.
